Frank A. Rinehart - lot 55 March 2007

FOLK ART Three-panel screen carved with Native American motifs, set with thirty-six original platinum print photographs of Native American tribesmen by Frank A. Rinehart, ca. 1901. (Used as a divider between Vancroft's Indian room and Billiards' room, this screen is a spectacular example of American folk art.) Photos signed F.A. Rinehart, copyrighted 1898 or 1899. Center panel: 100" x 33", side panels: 91" x 25", photos sight: 6 3/4" x 8 3/4".

MARIE ZIMMERMANN Carved wooden box on round ivory ball feet with cast bronze handles, hinges and hasp fashioned in Egyptian motifs, studded with cabochon jewels of amethyst and semi-precious quartz. The hand-carved wood surface is painted in green, blue, red and yellow with black outlining and natural brown wood edges. The box is lined in purple silk with small medallion designs in Eastern taste. (Pictured in the February 1922 issue of House and Garden, a copy of which is included with this lot.) Some small and unobtrusive areas of paint loss, minute edge chip to back. Unmarked. Provenance: craftsman's family. 10 1/4" x 12 1/2" x 8 5/8"

Marie Zimmermann - lot 04 September 2005

MARIE ZIMMERMANN Rectangular covered box in gold-plated copper, with a twisted copper-wire handle and a jeweled finial secured to the copper top. The elaborate Egyptian inspired finial is formed as a winged scarab, and was made in separate sections: at the bottom are the wings in copper with chased detailing and a round brownish-red disk of agate at its top and an amethyst bead at its bottom, underlying a three-dimensional beetle carved from lapis matrix with green-patinated wings. Box has protective lacquer, applied by the artist herself. Artist's cipher, M Zimmermann Maker. 4" x 13" x 7 1/4"
